“Ngalawa Sketch”
This was painted en plein air during a trip to Africa
in March 2007. The "ngalawa" is a sailboat native to Zanzibar
and used by fishermen. The skipper of this boat took us out for a very
exciting sail on a gusty morning, but here it is the previous day, with
sails drying during a low tide. This is on Chumbe Island, a wonderful
eco-resort and protected island and coral reef just off the coast of Zanzibar.
